Laptop Webcam Not Working? Fixes for Zoom, Teams and Meet

Just before an online class or interview, your webcam shows a black screen or "No camera found". Don't panic. Work through these checks quickly.

1. Check the privacy shutter or key

Many laptops have a physical sliding cover over the camera, or a keyboard key (often F8 or F10 with a camera icon) that disables it. Slide the cover open or press the key.

2. Close other apps using the camera

Only one app can use the camera at a time on some systems. Close Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp Desktop and browser tabs, then try again.

3. Check camera permissions

Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Camera:

  • Turn on Camera access.
  • Turn on Let apps access your camera.
  • Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera (needed for Zoom and Teams).

For browser meetings, click the camera icon in the address bar and allow access for the site.

4. Select the right camera in the app

In Zoom, Teams or Meet settings, choose the correct camera. If you connected an external webcam before, the app may still be using it.

5. Test with the Windows Camera app

Open the Camera app. If it works there, the problem is the meeting app's settings.

6. Reinstall the driver

In Device Manager, expand Cameras or Imaging devices. Right-click the camera → Uninstall device, restart. Check for updates from your manufacturer too. If the camera isn't listed at all, check BIOS settings; some laptops can disable the camera in BIOS.

7. Check antivirus settings

Some security software blocks camera access. Look for webcam protection settings.

Poor quality video?

  • Clean the lens gently.
  • Face a light source; see video call tips.
  • Use your phone as a webcam: Windows 11 supports using an Android phone as a webcam via Phone Link on supported devices, and third-party apps also exist.
Before important calls: test your camera 10 minutes early in the app you'll use.

Work laptops and restrictions

On company-managed laptops, IT departments may block camera access or specific apps. If Settings shows "Some of these settings are managed by your organisation", contact your IT support. Don't try to bypass restrictions, which may break company policies.

Using an external webcam

An external USB webcam is often a quick fix and usually improves quality:

  • Plug it in; Windows installs it automatically.
  • Select it in your meeting app's video settings.
  • Mount it on top of your monitor at eye level.
  • 1080p webcams with built-in microphones are affordable and good for daily calls.

Use your phone as a webcam

Modern phone cameras are far better than most laptop webcams. Options include:

  • Windows 11 with Android: Phone Link can let you use your Android phone as a connected camera on supported devices.
  • Mac with iPhone: Continuity Camera uses your iPhone as a webcam automatically.
  • Third-party apps: several reputable apps connect phone cameras to PCs over Wi-Fi or USB.

Use a small tripod or phone stand and keep the phone charging during calls.

Protect your privacy

Cover the camera when not in use, review which apps have camera permission, and keep your system updated. See browser privacy settings for website camera permissions.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone spy through my webcam?

Malware could, which is why a camera light or shutter is useful. Keep your system updated and use a cover when not in use.

Why is my camera upside down or mirrored?

Your own preview is often mirrored; others see it correctly. Update the driver for flipped images.
