Browser Privacy and Security Settings for Chrome, Edge and Firefox

Your web browser is your window to the internet, and a common target for scams and tracking. Modern browsers have excellent protections, but some need to be switched on.

Keep your browser updated

Browsers update automatically, but only when restarted. If you see an "Update" button in the corner, click it. In Chrome and Edge, check via Help → About.

Turn on Safe Browsing

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Security → Enhanced protection or Standard protection.
  • Edge: Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on.
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Block dangerous and deceptive content.

Use HTTPS-only mode

Turn on Always use secure connections (Chrome) or HTTPS-Only Mode (Firefox). The browser warns you before loading insecure sites.

Block third-party cookies

Third-party cookies let advertisers track you across websites. Block them in privacy settings. Firefox and Safari block many trackers by default; Edge offers "Strict" tracking prevention.

Review site permissions

Check which websites can use your location, camera, microphone and notifications. Remove sites you don't recognise. Block notification spam; see controlling notifications.

Audit extensions

Extensions can read everything on web pages you visit. Remove extensions you don't use, and only install well-known ones with many users. Beware of extensions that promise free downloads or coupons.

Check saved passwords

Chrome's Password Checkup and Edge's Password Monitor warn you about leaked, reused or weak passwords. Fix the ones they flag. See strong passwords.

Ask where to save downloads

Turn on Ask where to save each file so nothing downloads silently.

Clear data regularly

Clear cookies and cache occasionally, especially on shared computers. See clearing cache and cookies.

Private browsing isn't invisible

Incognito or InPrivate mode doesn't save history on your device, but your internet provider, employer or school and websites can still see your activity.

Quick setup: Safe Browsing on, HTTPS-only on, third-party cookies blocked, and unused extensions removed.

Fixing a hijacked browser

If your homepage keeps changing, searches go through an unfamiliar search engine, or pop-up ads appear everywhere, your browser may have been hijacked by an unwanted extension or program:

  1. Remove unknown extensions.
  2. Check your default search engine and startup pages in settings and correct them.
  3. Uninstall recently installed unknown programs from Windows Settings → Apps.
  4. Reset browser settings to default.
  5. Run a full antivirus scan.
  6. Block notifications from websites you don't recognise.

Use separate profiles

Chrome, Edge and Firefox support multiple profiles, each with its own bookmarks, passwords, extensions and history. Create separate profiles for work and personal browsing, or for each family member on a shared computer. It keeps accounts separate and reduces the risk of logging into the wrong account.

Browser settings on your phone

  • Chrome on Android: Settings → Privacy and security → Safe Browsing, and Site settings for notifications and location.
  • Safari on iPhone: Settings → Apps → Safari → turn on Fraudulent Website Warning, Prevent Cross-Site Tracking and Hide IP Address.
  • Samsung Internet: Settings → Privacy and security → Smart anti-tracking and block pop-ups.

Phones are just as exposed to phishing sites as computers, so these settings matter everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which browser is the most private?

Firefox, Brave and Safari have strong privacy defaults. Chrome and Edge can be made private with the right settings.

Should I let my browser save passwords?

Built-in browser password managers are reasonably secure if your device and account are protected with strong passwords and 2FA.
