Laptop Touchpad Not Working? How to Get It Back
A frozen touchpad makes a laptop almost unusable. Very often it's simply been turned off by a key press or setting. Here's how to get it working again.
1. Try the touchpad shortcut
Many laptops have a key that toggles the touchpad, usually a function key with a touchpad icon (like F6, F7 or F9), sometimes used with Fn. Some HP laptops toggle it by double-tapping the top-left corner of the touchpad.
2. Check touchpad settings
Use the keyboard: press Windows, type "touchpad" and press Enter. Use Tab and Space to switch the Touchpad toggle on. Also check the option Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.
3. Unplug external mice
Some laptops disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected.
4. Restart
Hold the power button or use Alt + F4 on the desktop to choose Restart.
5. Reinstall or update the driver
Open Device Manager (Windows + X, then M). Look under Mice and other pointing devices or Human Interface Devices. Uninstall the touchpad device and restart. Download the latest touchpad or chipset driver from your manufacturer (Synaptics, Elan, or Precision touchpad).
6. Check BIOS
In BIOS settings, make sure the internal pointing device is enabled.
7. Clean and dry the touchpad
Moisture, oil or dirt affects sensitivity. Wipe it with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and dry it.
Jumpy cursor or accidental clicks?
- Adjust sensitivity in Touchpad settings.
- Turn off Tap to click if you click accidentally while typing.
- Use a quality charger; poor chargers can cause erratic touchpad behaviour.
Warning: raised touchpad
If the touchpad is raised, hard to click or the case is bulging, the battery beneath may be swollen. Stop using the laptop and get the battery replaced professionally.
Useful gestures
- Two fingers: scroll; pinch to zoom.
- Three fingers up: see all windows.
- Three fingers down: show desktop.
- Three fingers left/right: switch apps.
Customising a Precision touchpad
Most modern Windows laptops use Precision touchpads, which support advanced settings in Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad:
- Cursor speed: adjust how fast the pointer moves.
- Taps: choose tap-to-click, two-finger tap for right-click, and press the lower right corner to right-click.
- Scroll and zoom: choose scroll direction ("Down motion scrolls down" or up) and pinch to zoom.
- Three- and four-finger gestures: customise to switch apps, desktops, or control audio.
- Advanced gestures: assign custom actions like opening search or copying.
If these options aren't available, your laptop may use a Synaptics or Elan driver with its own settings app.
Stop accidental touches while typing
- Lower touchpad sensitivity to "Low" or "Medium".
- Turn off tap-to-click and use physical clicks.
- Rest palms slightly away from the touchpad edges.
- Use a mouse for long editing sessions.
Choosing a mouse
For comfort during long work, an external mouse helps. Wireless mice with a USB receiver are simple and reliable; Bluetooth mice free up a USB port. See Bluetooth troubleshooting if pairing fails.
