How to Improve Video Call Quality on Zoom, Meet and WhatsApp
Frozen faces, robotic voices and "your connection is unstable" messages make online classes and meetings frustrating. Most call problems come from the internet connection, audio setup or device load, and can be improved.
Improve your connection
- Use a cable for laptops when possible. See Ethernet vs Wi-Fi.
- If on Wi-Fi, sit close to the router and use the 5 GHz band.
- Ask others at home to pause streaming and large downloads during important calls.
- Check upload speed; calls need about 3 Mbps upload for HD. See speed tests explained.
Reduce load on your device
- Close unused apps and browser tabs.
- Plug in your laptop; battery saver can reduce performance.
- Update the call app and your operating system.
Sound better
- Use earphones with a microphone to prevent echo.
- Mute when not speaking.
- Choose a quiet room with soft furnishings, which reduce echo.
- Turn on noise suppression in the app settings.
Look better
- Light in front of you: face a window or lamp. Avoid a bright window behind you.
- Camera at eye level: put the laptop on books.
- Clean the camera lens.
- Use background blur if your room is busy.
App settings
- Zoom: Settings → Video → turn on HD if your connection allows; Audio → background noise suppression.
- Google Meet: Settings → Video → adjust send and receive resolution to save bandwidth.
- WhatsApp: turn on "Use less data for calls" only if your connection is weak.
If your connection is weak
- Turn off your video and keep audio on.
- Lower the video resolution in settings.
- Try your phone's mobile data or hotspot as a backup.
- Join by phone dial-in if the service offers it.
Test before important calls
Most apps have test features, like Zoom's test meeting or Meet's green room preview. Check camera, microphone and lighting 10 minutes before an interview or exam.

Affordable upgrades that make a big difference
| Upgrade | Improvement |
|---|---|
| Wired earphones with mic | Clearer voice, no echo |
| USB headset | Better microphone, noise reduction |
| Desk lamp or ring light | Brighter, clearer face |
| Laptop stand | Camera at eye level, better posture |
| Ethernet cable or adapter | Stable connection |
| External webcam | Sharper video than many laptop cameras |
Start with lighting and audio; they improve perceived quality more than an expensive camera.
Better calls from your phone
- Use Wi-Fi rather than weak mobile data.
- Prop the phone up at eye level instead of holding it.
- Use the rear camera for higher quality when showing things, if the app allows.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb to prevent interruptions and notification sounds.
- Plug in the charger for long calls, since video drains battery quickly.
Background and presentation
A tidy, simple background looks more professional than a virtual background, which can glitch around your hair and hands. Sit facing a window during the day, and position yourself so your head and shoulders fill the frame, with a little space above your head.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my voice sound robotic?
Usually packet loss or low upload speed. Move closer to the router or use a cable.
Why do others hear an echo?
Your microphone picks up your speakers. Use earphones.
