Why Is My Phone Overheating? Causes and Fixes
It is normal for a phone to feel warm sometimes, especially while charging or gaming. But a phone that becomes too hot to hold, shows a temperature warning, dims its screen or slows down dramatically is telling you something is wrong. In hot summer weather, overheating becomes even more common.
This guide explains the common causes, what to do immediately when your phone gets hot, and how to prevent it from happening again.
Warm vs overheating: what is normal?
A phone feeling warm during video calls, navigation, gaming, fast charging or setting up a new device is normal. It becomes a concern when:
- It is too hot to hold comfortably.
- It gets hot while you are not using it.
- You see a warning such as "Phone needs to cool down".
- Charging stops or slows, or the screen dims automatically.
- The battery is swelling, the back is bulging, or you smell something unusual.
What to do immediately
- Unplug the charger if it is charging.
- Close heavy apps such as games, camera, video and navigation.
- Remove the case, which traps heat.
- Move to shade or a cooler room, away from direct sunlight.
- Turn on airplane mode or switch off the phone for a few minutes.
Do not put your phone in a fridge or freezer, or in front of an air conditioner vent at close range. Sudden temperature changes can cause condensation inside the phone and damage it.
Common causes of overheating
1. Direct sunlight and hot environments
Leaving a phone on a car dashboard, in direct sun, or using it outside on a hot day can push its temperature up quickly. Phones are designed to work best in moderate temperatures.
2. Heavy use
Games with rich graphics, long video recording, video calls and GPS navigation all work the processor hard. Doing these while charging adds even more heat.
3. Charging habits
Fast charging generates heat. Using the phone heavily while charging, charging under a pillow or blanket, or using cheap, uncertified chargers and cables can all cause overheating.
4. Background apps and poor signal
Apps stuck in the background, constant syncing, or a weak mobile signal force the phone to work harder. In areas with poor signal, the phone boosts its radio power continuously, which drains the battery and creates heat.
5. Malware or faulty apps
If your phone gets hot while idle and the battery drains unusually fast, a misbehaving app or malware may be running constantly. Check battery usage in Settings to find the culprit.
6. An ageing battery
Older batteries become less efficient and can heat up more. If your phone is several years old and overheats frequently, the battery may need replacement.
How to prevent overheating
- Check battery usage: Settings → Battery. If an app uses a lot of battery that you barely use, force stop, update or uninstall it.
- Update your software: updates often fix bugs that cause heating.
- Lower screen brightness and turn on adaptive brightness.
- Use original or certified chargers and avoid charging on soft surfaces.
- Avoid gaming while charging.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data where signal is weak.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and never leave it in a parked car.
- Clear up storage. An almost-full phone works harder; see our storage guide.
- Use battery saver on very hot days.
Tips for gamers
Many phones include a game mode that balances performance and heat. Lowering graphics quality and frame rate in game settings reduces heat significantly with little visible difference. Play in short sessions in a cool room, and remove thick cases while gaming.
When to visit a service centre
- The phone overheats even when idle after you have checked apps and updates.
- It shuts down by itself from heat repeatedly.
- The battery health is low or the battery is swelling.
- The phone was recently dropped or exposed to water and started overheating afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Can overheating damage my phone?
Yes. Repeated overheating speeds up battery wear and in rare cases can damage other components. Phones have protections that slow down or shut off to prevent serious damage.
Is it safe to use a phone cooler fan?
Clip-on cooling fans designed for phones can help during long gaming sessions. Avoid anything that causes rapid cooling or condensation.
