Phone Touch Screen Not Working or Unresponsive? Try These Fixes

A touch screen that ignores your taps, responds slowly, or taps things by itself ("ghost touches") makes a phone almost unusable. Before assuming the screen is broken, try these fixes.

1. Clean the screen and your hands

Oil, water and dirt interfere with touch. Wipe the screen with a microfibre cloth and dry your hands.

2. Remove the screen protector and case

Thick, cheap or bubbled screen protectors reduce sensitivity. A case pressing on the screen edges can also cause ghost touches. Remove both and test.

3. Force restart

If the screen is frozen:

  • Most Android phones: hold Power + Volume Down for 10–20 seconds until it restarts.
  • iPhone: press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

4. Unplug the charger

Poor-quality chargers can cause electrical noise that makes touch erratic. If problems only happen while charging, change the charger.

5. Adjust touch sensitivity

If you use a screen protector, turn on Touch sensitivity or Screen protector mode in Display settings (available on many Android phones).

6. Check for app problems

If touch fails only in one app, update or reinstall it. If problems started after installing an app, test in Safe Mode.

7. Update the software

Touch driver bugs are fixed in system updates. See updating Android.

8. Test the screen

Many Android phones have a hidden test menu. On Samsung, dial *#0*# and choose "Touch" to see if all areas respond. Other brands have test tools in their support apps. Dead zones usually indicate hardware damage.

9. Water or drop damage

If the phone got wet or was dropped, turn it off and let it dry completely. Don't use rice or heat. If problems continue, visit a service centre.

10. Factory reset

If the touch screen works in Safe Mode or the test menu but not normally, a factory reset may help. Back up first.

Can't use the screen at all? Connect a USB mouse with an OTG adapter to many Android phones to control them and back up data.

Back up your data if the screen is failing

If your touch screen is becoming unreliable, back up while you still can. A few options work even with a partly broken screen:

  • Automatic backups: if Google or iCloud backup and photo backup were already on, just connect to Wi-Fi and charge the phone overnight; backups often run automatically.
  • USB mouse: many Android phones work with a USB mouse via an OTG adapter, letting you navigate and start backups.
  • Computer connection: connect via USB and copy photos. On Android you may need to tap "File transfer"; with a mouse you can do this even if touch fails.
  • Voice commands: Google Assistant or Siri can open apps and settings by voice.
  • Screen mirroring: some phones can mirror to a PC through the manufacturer's software or Phone Link, allowing control from the computer.

Getting a screen repaired

  • Authorised service centres use original parts, which keep features like fingerprint sensors and water resistance working properly.
  • Third-party shops are often cheaper but may use lower-quality screens with poorer touch response and colour.
  • Before handing over your phone, back up, sign out of sensitive apps if possible, and ask whether they need your passcode. Many phones now offer a "maintenance mode" or "repair mode" that hides your personal data during repairs.

Ask for a warranty on the repair, and test touch across the whole screen before leaving the shop.

Frequently asked questions

What causes ghost touches?

Faulty chargers, damaged screens, pressure from cases, or software bugs.

Is screen replacement expensive?

It depends on the model. OLED screens cost more. Use authorised service centres for quality parts.
