Phone Storage Full? 10 Ways to Free Up Space on Android

The "Storage space running out" warning always seems to appear at the worst moment, usually just as you are about to take an important photo or install an app you need. A full phone also tends to become slow, because Android needs free space to run smoothly.

This guide shows you ten safe ways to reclaim storage on an Android phone. Menu names can differ slightly between brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Google Pixel, but the steps are very similar on all of them.

1. See what is using your storage

Open Settings → Storage (on some phones it is under Battery and device care or About phone). You will see a breakdown by category, such as Apps, Images, Videos, Audio and System. Start with whichever category is biggest, because that is where you will win back the most space.

2. Use a built-in cleaning tool

Most Android phones include a cleaning tool. Google's Files app has a Clean tab that suggests junk files, duplicate files, large files and old screenshots you can delete. Samsung phones have a similar option under Device care → Storage. These tools show you exactly what will be deleted before you confirm, which makes them safe to use.

3. Clean up WhatsApp and other chat apps

Messaging apps are among the biggest hidden storage users, because every forwarded video, meme and voice note is saved to your phone.

  1. In WhatsApp, go to Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage.
  2. Review files Larger than 5 MB and Forwarded many times, and delete what you do not need.
  3. Open individual chats, especially busy groups, and clear their media.
  4. Under Media auto-download, set videos and documents to download only when you tap them.

4. Back up photos and videos, then remove local copies

Photos and videos usually take up the most space. Back them up to a cloud service such as Google Photos, then remove the copies stored on the phone.

In Google Photos, once backup is complete, tap your profile picture and choose Free up space. It only removes items that are already safely backed up. Before doing this, open the Google Photos website on a computer and confirm your photos are really there.

Important: Never delete photos from your phone until you have confirmed they are backed up. Free cloud storage is limited, so check how much space your account has left.

5. Clear app cache

Apps store temporary data, called cache, to load faster. Over time this can grow to hundreds of megabytes for apps such as browsers, social media and streaming apps.

Go to Settings → Apps, choose an app, open Storage, and tap Clear cache. This is safe and will not log you out. Avoid Clear data or Clear storage unless you want to reset the app completely, because that removes your settings and sometimes saved content.

6. Uninstall or archive apps you never open

Be honest about which apps you actually use. Games in particular can take several gigabytes each. Long-press an app icon and choose Uninstall.

Recent Android versions and the Play Store also offer archiving, which removes most of an app while keeping your data, so you can restore it later with one tap. You can let the Play Store archive unused apps automatically in its settings.

7. Empty your Downloads folder

PDFs, APK installers, images and documents you opened once often stay in the Downloads folder forever. Open the Files app, go to Downloads, sort by size, and remove anything you no longer need.

8. Manage offline music, videos and maps

Streaming apps such as Spotify, YouTube and Netflix let you download content for offline use, and these downloads can be very large. Open each app's downloads section and remove shows, songs or videos you have already watched or listened to. Do the same for offline maps you no longer need.

9. Move files to an SD card or computer

If your phone has a microSD card slot, you can move photos, videos and music to the card. In the Files app, select the files and choose Move to → SD card. Alternatively, connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable and copy large folders, such as old videos, to your computer for safekeeping.

10. Build habits that prevent the problem

  • Turn off automatic media download in chat apps.
  • Delete screenshots once you have used them.
  • Review your storage once a month.
  • Keep at least 10–15% of your storage free for smooth performance.

Why is "System" taking so much space?

The System category includes the Android operating system itself and cannot be reduced much. It also grows slightly after major updates. This is normal, so focus your cleanup on apps, media and downloads instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is clearing cache safe?

Yes. Cache is temporary data that apps rebuild when needed. An app may load slightly slower the first time after clearing it.

Should I use third-party cleaner apps?

It is best to avoid them. The tools built into Android and Google's Files app are safe and effective, while many third-party cleaners show heavy ads and request unnecessary permissions.
