Laptop Keyboard Not Working? How to Fix Unresponsive Keys

A laptop keyboard that stops working, types the wrong characters or has dead keys is frustrating. Many causes are software settings that are easy to fix.

1. Restart the laptop

A restart fixes temporary driver glitches. If you can't type your password, use the on-screen keyboard from the accessibility icon on the sign-in screen.

2. Test outside Windows

Restart and press the key to enter BIOS (often F2, F10, Del or Esc). If the keyboard works in BIOS, the problem is in Windows, not the hardware.

3. Turn off Filter Keys

Filter Keys ignores brief or repeated key presses and can make the keyboard seem broken. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard and turn off Filter keys and Sticky keys.

4. Wrong characters? Check the layout

If @ and " are swapped or letters are wrong, you may have the wrong language layout. Press Windows + Space to switch layouts, and remove unwanted keyboards in Settings → Time & language → Language & region.

5. Letters typing numbers?

On some small laptops, Num Lock turns certain letters into numbers. Press Num Lock or Fn + Num Lock.

6. Reinstall the keyboard driver

In Device Manager → Keyboards, right-click your keyboard → Uninstall device, then restart. Windows reinstalls it.

7. Update drivers and BIOS

Install updates from Windows Update and your manufacturer's support page.

8. Clean under the keys

Crumbs and dust cause sticky or unresponsive keys. Turn the laptop off, tilt it, and use compressed air. See cleaning your keyboard.

9. After a spill

Turn off immediately, unplug, drain upside down and have it checked. Liquid damage often affects keyboards days later.

10. Use an external keyboard meanwhile

A USB or Bluetooth keyboard keeps you working while you arrange repairs. Laptop keyboards can usually be replaced by a technician.

Specific keys not working

ProblemTry this
Only one key doesn't workClean under it; if still dead, likely hardware
Whole row of keys deadUsually a keyboard connection or hardware fault
Keys repeat by themselvesCheck for stuck keys, spills; adjust repeat delay in keyboard settings
Brightness/volume keys don't workInstall manufacturer's hotkey utility; check Fn Lock
Windows key doesn't workCheck for a "game mode" lock key on gaming laptops

Temporary workaround: remap keys

If one key fails, you can remap another rarely used key to perform its function using Microsoft's free PowerToys Keyboard Manager. For example, map the Right Alt or Caps Lock key to act as a broken letter until you get the keyboard replaced.

Keyboard replacement

Laptop keyboards can usually be replaced. On some models, it's a simple part swap; on others, the keyboard is attached to the top case, making replacement more expensive. Get a quote from an authorised service centre or trusted technician, and ask for a genuine part with the right layout (such as US English).

Protect your keyboard

A thin silicone keyboard cover protects against dust and small spills, especially if you eat or drink near your laptop, though some people find covers affect typing feel.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some function keys not work?

Try holding Fn, or toggle Fn Lock (often Fn + Esc). Manufacturer utilities may also be needed for special keys.

Why does the keyboard backlight not turn on?

Look for a key with a keyboard light icon, often used with Fn.
