How to Connect Your Laptop to a TV or Projector

A big TV screen is great for movies, presentations and video calls with family. Connecting a laptop is easy once you know the right cable and settings.

Method 1: HDMI cable (most reliable)

  1. Connect an HDMI cable from the laptop to the TV.
  2. Turn on the TV and select the right HDMI input using the Source or Input button.
  3. Press Windows + P on the laptop and choose Duplicate or Extend.

Method 2: USB-C

If your laptop has no HDMI port, check if its USB-C port supports video (look for a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol). Use a USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable.

Method 3: Wireless

  • Miracast (Windows): press Windows + K and choose your smart TV. The TV needs screen mirroring enabled.
  • Chromecast / Google TV: in Chrome, click the three dots → Cast to cast a tab or your desktop.
  • AirPlay (Mac): use the Screen Mirroring icon in Control Center with supported TVs.

Wireless is convenient but can lag, so use HDMI for presentations and gaming.

Projectors

Most projectors have HDMI; older ones use VGA, which needs an adapter. Choose Duplicate mode so you see the same as your audience, or Extend to use PowerPoint's presenter view.

Fix blurry or cut-off picture

In Settings → System → Display, select the TV and choose its recommended resolution. If the edges are cut off, turn off overscan or set the picture size to "Just Scan" or "Screen Fit" in TV settings.

No sound on the TV?

Click the volume icon and select the TV as the output device. See no sound on Windows.

"No signal" on TV

  • Check the input source matches the HDMI port used.
  • Try another HDMI cable or port.
  • Press Windows + P and select Duplicate.
  • Restart the laptop with the cable connected.
  • Update graphics drivers.

Presenting from a laptop like a pro

  • Arrive early to test the connection, since meeting rooms often have unfamiliar cables or adapters.
  • Carry adapters: USB-C to HDMI and HDMI to VGA cover most rooms.
  • Use Extend mode with PowerPoint Presenter View so you see notes and the next slide while the audience sees only the current slide.
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb to hide notifications during the presentation.
  • Plug in the charger, and disable sleep settings temporarily.
  • Close personal apps and browser tabs.
  • Have a backup: a copy of the file on a USB drive and in the cloud, in both PPTX and PDF formats.

Watching movies from a laptop on TV

  • Use HDMI for the best quality and sound.
  • Set the TV's picture mode to Movie or Cinema.
  • If subtitles are small, increase subtitle size in the video player.
  • Set Windows to "Second screen only" to turn off the laptop screen and save power.
  • Streaming apps may limit resolution on external displays unless using supported apps or browsers; a smart TV's built-in app may offer better quality.

Gaming on a TV

Turn on the TV's Game Mode to reduce input lag, and choose the highest refresh rate the TV supports in Windows display settings. Use Bluetooth or wired controllers for couch gaming.

Frequently asked questions
