Windows Search Not Working? Here's How to Fix It
Windows search is how most people open apps and find files. When it stops working, showing blank results or refusing to type, it's frustrating. These fixes solve most search problems.
1. Restart your PC
A simple restart fixes many search glitches caused by stuck background processes.
2. Restart the search process
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Details page, find SearchHost.exe (or SearchUI.exe on Windows 10), right-click and choose End task. It restarts automatically. Restarting Windows Explorer from the Processes page can also help.
3. Run the search troubleshooter
Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Search and Indexing, and describe the problem when asked.
4. Check the Windows Search service
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, find Windows Search. It should be Running with Startup type Automatic (Delayed Start). Right-click → Restart.
5. Rebuild the search index
If search opens but can't find files:
- Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows.
- Click Advanced indexing options.
- Click Advanced → Rebuild.
Rebuilding can take a while. Search results improve as it completes.
6. Add folders to the index
In Searching Windows, choose Enhanced mode to index your whole PC, or add specific folders under Classic mode.
7. Repair system files
Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow in an admin terminal.
8. Install Windows updates
Microsoft often fixes search bugs in updates. Check Settings → Windows Update.
Quick alternatives
While fixing search, press Windows + R and type program names like notepad or control to open them, or search inside File Explorer. See our File Explorer tips.
When the Start menu itself won't open
Sometimes the problem is bigger than search: the Start menu won't open at all. Try these steps:
- Restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Processes → Windows Explorer → Restart).
- Sign out and back in (Ctrl + Alt + Delete → Sign out).
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run the system file repair commands mentioned above.
- Create a new local user account from Settings → Accounts → Other users. If Start works there, your original user profile may be damaged; you can move files to the new profile.
Getting better search results
Once search works, a few tricks make it more useful:
- Use the tabs at the top of the search panel (Apps, Documents, Settings, Web) to narrow results.
- Type part of a setting's name, like "display" or "bluetooth", to jump straight to it.
- Use File Explorer's search box for file names in a specific folder; it's faster than searching the whole PC.
- Name files clearly so search can find them: "2026-09 Electricity Bill.pdf" beats "scan001.pdf".
Privacy settings for search
In Settings → Privacy & security → Search permissions, you can turn off search history on the device, control whether cloud content from your Microsoft account appears, and set SafeSearch for web results. On shared family PCs, clearing search history is a good idea.
For finding files faster in general, see our File Explorer tips.
