iPhone Storage Full? How to Free Up Space Without Losing Photos

"iPhone Storage Almost Full" stops you taking photos, installing updates and sometimes even receiving messages. Here's how to free up space safely, starting with the biggest wins.

See what's using space

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. A coloured bar shows categories, and below it a list of apps sorted by size. Apple also shows recommendations, such as offloading unused apps.

Offload unused apps

Offloading removes an app but keeps its documents and data. The icon stays on your home screen; tap it to reinstall. Turn on Offload Unused Apps in iPhone Storage to do this automatically, or tap an app and choose Offload App.

Optimise photos

Photos and videos are usually the biggest category.

  • Turn on iCloud Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage in Settings → Photos. Full-resolution originals stay in iCloud while smaller versions stay on the phone.
  • Delete duplicates: in the Photos app, look for the Duplicates album under Utilities and merge them.
  • Delete old screen recordings and long videos you don't need.
  • Empty Recently Deleted, since deleted items still use space for 30 days.

If iCloud storage is full too, see managing iCloud storage.

Clean up Messages and WhatsApp

  • Settings → Messages → Keep Messages → 1 Year.
  • In iPhone Storage → Messages, review large attachments.
  • In WhatsApp, go to Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage and delete large files.

Remove downloaded media

Delete downloaded episodes in Netflix, Spotify, Podcasts and YouTube, and remove offline maps you no longer need.

Clear Safari data

Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. This signs you out of websites.

What about "System Data"?

System Data includes caches and temporary files and changes size over time. Restarting and updating iOS can reduce it. It's not usually worth worrying about unless it's extremely large.

Save space with camera settings

In Settings → Camera → Formats, choose High Efficiency. Record video at 1080p instead of 4K for everyday clips.

Keep free space: aim for at least 5–10 GB free so iOS updates can install and the phone runs smoothly.

Apps that quietly use the most space

Some apps grow much larger than their download size because of stored media and caches:

AppWhat builds upWhat to do
WhatsAppPhotos, videos, voice notesManage Storage, turn off Save to Camera Roll
Instagram, TikTok, FacebookCacheClear cache in app settings, or delete and reinstall
Spotify, YouTube, NetflixDownloadsRemove old downloads
PodcastsAuto-downloaded episodesLimit downloads in settings
GamesExtra data and updatesOffload games you're not playing

For social apps without a "clear cache" option, deleting and reinstalling the app removes the cache. Make sure you know your login first.

Move photos to a computer

If you don't want to pay for iCloud, move photos to a computer:

  • Windows: connect the iPhone, tap Trust, then open the Photos app and choose Import. Or use the Apple Devices app.
  • Mac: open Photos with the iPhone connected and import.

After confirming the photos are safely on the computer (and backed up elsewhere), delete them from the iPhone. If iCloud Photos is on, deleting removes them from iCloud too, so be careful. See organising photos.

Buying your next iPhone

If you often run out of space, choose more storage next time. For most people who take lots of photos and videos, 256 GB is far more comfortable than 128 GB.

Frequently asked questions

Will offloading delete my game progress?

No, offloading keeps app data. Deleting an app removes it, unless it's synced to the cloud.

Can I add storage to an iPhone?

No, iPhones don't have memory card slots. Use iCloud or copy photos to a computer.
